If you enjoy fishing, you will love the Machangulo Peninsula! The renowned Hell’s Gate in Santa Maria attracts keen fisherfolk from all over Africa to challenge their deep-sea fishing expertise. Furthermore, the shores of Machangulo boast some of the world’s best big-game fishing. We love hearing all the exciting fishing tales from our guests. Just let us know when you want to go, and we will set you up for a day at sea.
Whale Watching (JUNE - OCT)
Witness the majestic humpback whales in all their glory along the Machangulo peninsula. Their extraordinary migration begins in Antarctica as they journey thousands of kilometers to breed and give birth in the warmer East African waters. As our guests, the primely located villas award you the best front view as they glide and breach high out of the seas. We happily schedule a boat charter trip if you want a closer look. Truly an awe-inspiring site to behold!
Surfar
Catch a wave or a few at Crocodile Rock, south of The Machangulo Nature Reserve and close to the exquisite Villa Baleia. This incredible spot lures avid surfers with fantastic waves for an epic ride. No hassle if you are a beginner – a lesson or two can be arranged. We recommend you bring your surfboard. However, upon request, we can organise boards. Should you visit us from June to September in the winter, pack a thin wetsuit to take the chilly edge off.
BUSH PICNIC IN MAPUTO NATIONAL PARK
Outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife wanderers are in for an authentic African adventure! We arrange an unforgettable expedition amongst the beautifully preserved wildlife, including elephants, nyala, elands, zebras, and giraffes. Bird lovers can tick off several species, such as fish eagles, black-bellied bustards, and kingfishers. We stop at one of the numerous lunch spots to replenish with a lavish picnic lunch inspired by the delicious Mozambique food flavors. Enjoy mouthwatering cuisine while taking in the wide-open African bush views and animal sightings.

The careful preservation and natural-rich habitats surrounding the Machangulo Nature Reserve have led to over 300 species of birds residing and visiting the region. These species include birds of prey, bee-eaters, and many kingfishers. If you are an avid bird watcher, bring your wish list along. If not, enjoy a calm morning or afternoon watching impressive birdlife glide and sweep the African skies.
Mergulho
Just a quick boat trip through the channel that separates Inhaca from the mainland takes you to more beautiful beaches to explore. This area is a spectacular snorkelling location. Discover an underwater wonderland in the protected coral reef reserve and the Marine Reserve. If you have an underwater camera, bring it along and create memories! We can arrange a half-day trip to satisfy your snorkelling curiosity. However, you can explore Inhaca Island for a full day. In that case, we organize a scrumptious picnic lunch to keep your expedition levels up.
Scuba Diving
Divers have access to an ultimate deep-sea dive experience with preserved Machangulo marine life in its rarest form. These dives are done precisely and carefully to ensure the natural environment is undisturbed. Five dive sites offer beautiful views of raggies, leopard sharks, octopuses, turtles, eels, white tips, marble rays, and ribbon tail rays. With expert diving guides and private pool sessions at your villa’s pool, even beginners are in safe hands. Ocean Echo Scuba provides all the necessary equipment for the ultimate diving experience, and we work closely with them to ensure this is what you get.
Passeios de Vela
Sail your way to Inhaca Island and Portuguese Island on a Dhow Sailing Trip. This type of sailing is popular in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, where a one or two-masted sailing vessel with triangular sails cruises the sparkling waters. These islands are the most popular locations near Machangulo and Vilanculos, with incredible landscapes and Mozambique culture to explore. We will assist in planning your perfect sailing expedition.

If you have some adrenalin to get rid of on your Mozambique holiday, explore the area on a 4×4 and travel through ancient forests and unending fields of coconut trees and mangroves. Just let us know when you’re up for it, and we’ll take care of the rest.
KAYAKING, SUP AND TUBING
The calm bay side in Santa Maria is the ideal spot for water sports-related activities. Cruise the sparkling waters with a kayak either on your own or go on a guided tour to the mangroves. Get your agility going on a stand-up paddle board, or have an absolute blast with tubing. Whatever you choose, your rented gear is dropped off at your villa on the same day as the activity. TURTLE TOURS (Oct - March)
Machangulo offers a vital refuge for the Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles. These amazing marine reptiles emerge from their ocean home to lay their eggs on the beach. While you are welcome to stroll the beach seeking their tractor-like tracks, why not join our Monitor team? This incredible team patrols the beach every 12 hours during low tide, keeping their trained eyes on the lookout for tracks and nests. At the same time, the team gladly shares their wisdom about these ancient sea creatures with you.
MASSAGE
After a day of exploring and activities in Machangulo, Vilanculos, Santa Maria, or Inhaca, spoil yourself with a soothing and rejuvenating massage. You choose from various treatments. For your convenience, we set up on your villa balcony or next to the pool. All you need do is listen to the waves while our trained masseuse takes your mind and body into a world of total relaxation.
